Randolph Police See Nearly 10 Percent Drop in Overall Crime Rate

RANDOLPH — Town Manager David Murphy and Chief William Pace are pleased to announce that the Town of Randolph saw a 9.25 percent drop in serious crimes from 2015 to 2016.

Serious crimes, designated as “Part 1 Crimes” by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are considered the most impactful crimes that can affect a community. They include murder/manslaughter, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, arson and motor vehicle theft.

In 2016, there were a total of 1,284 crimes reported in Randolph, down from 1,415 in 2015.

Specific categories in Part 1 crimes saw a significant drop, including:

• Aggravated Assault – 37 percent (111 in 2015, 69 in 2016)
• Burglary / Breaking and Entering – 41 percent (111 in 2015, 65 in 2016)
• Motor Vehicle Theft – 32 percent (43 in 2015, 29 in 2016)
• Theft from a Motor Vehicle – 39 percent (92 in 2015, 56 in 2016)
• Drug / Narcotics Violations – 26 percent (98 in 2015, 79 in 2016)
• Weapons Law Violations – 38 percent (26 in 2015, 16 in 2016)

“I am pleased to represent a team of incredibly dedicated and well-trained police officers who consistently work to improve the safety and security of our town,” Chief Pace said. “On behalf of the department, we look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Randolph in 2017 and pledge to continue this trend.”

The department credits its patrol planning and emphasis on deterrent directed patrolsfor part of the drop in crime. The patrol strategy, which launched in 2015, enhances police visibility at high population areas, such as senior housing, schools and commercial business plazas. “The patrol strategy emphasizes the department’s effort to improve the quality of life for our residents,” Chief Pace added.

Randolph Police issued more than 2,000 citations for speeding, stop sign and red light enforcement as well as school crossing and pedestrian crossing violations in an effort to cut down motor vehicle accidents and distracted driving.

There was one homicide in Randolph in 2016. Overall, Randolph’s crime rate has dropped 30 percent since 2010.

“The Randolph Police Department has gone above and beyond to bolster the community’s safety in recent years,” Town Manager Murphy said. “I commend Chief Pace for his leadership and encourage all residents to take part in the department’s community policing initiatives to develop better relationships with the officers who serve Randolph day in and day out.”
